Final collage of contrasting energies: flourishing (left) vs. withering (right).
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Module Two focused on applying color theory principles to various physical and digital mediums. Although previous modules briefly touched on color application and basic vocabulary, this module provided a preview of various color-related techniques, including both drawing skills and computer-based techniques. The module also introduced the types of color harmony structures and how to choose an appropriate scheme for a composition.
Each exercise developed color-related vocabulary to strengthen the ability to describe, justify, and analyze color choices in a composition. Based on descriptive language, color psychology, and associated energies, I carefully determined colors to convey selected principles. Finally, the module expanded Photoshop skills and reiterated the importance of testing multiple iterations of color applications and compositional strategies.
STATEMENT:
Throughout each exercise in Module Two, I focused on representing color harmonies accurately and intentionally. I approached each exercise with an open mind and allowed the colors to inform how I could further develop the compositions, rather than choosing colors with the intention of creating a particular final outcome. I prioritized intention in each exercise’s outcome, as this helped final compositions to harmonize with their intended energy and hues.
I applied this mindset to each exercise in various ways. First, I created Exercise 1’s abstract shapes while prioritizing balance and movement, then developed color through abstract form drawings. Next, my animation frames from Module One enabled me to create fluid, harmonious frames in Exercise 2; I used color in these compositions to emphasize existing principles in my animation and harmonize with the frames’ energies. Finally, I used my overall knowledge of color harmonies to craft a digital collage in Exercise 3, focusing on portraying “flourishing” vs. “withering” through hues and chosen imagery.
REFLECTION:
Throughout this module, I am proud of how my color theory and application skills have developed. Even with a brief introduction last semester, my color harmony application in other modules did not yet feel solidified. However, after studying these principles with more depth and practice, I am confident in how to justify using particular colors and schemes throughout my work.
I appreciated the opportunity to work through a variety of platforms and techniques, from markers and traditional drawing to Photoshop recoloring and image cutouts. Learning about valuable tools, including these Photoshop techniques and the Adobe Color website, will be extremely helpful in future projects as I continue working digitally.
In the future, I am interested in continuing to explore ways to make my final collage for Exercise 3 more cohesive. I found it challenging to prioritize color above all else as I searched for images and ways to visually connect them without creating an extremely busy and visually overwhelming composition. Although I am still satisfied with my final outcome, with more time, I would have continued exploring ways to arrange my chosen images or modify the amount of forms used.
