PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
For this project, I was commissioned to redesign the Track and Field logo and merch for my high school. The coach first reached out to me in Winter 2023 and shared his idea for a new way of representing the team. He envisioned a modification of the commonly used logo for track teams (a shoe with wings), incorporating a lightning bolt to represent the Flashes team. It needed to be recognizable as a track and field symbol, yet unique to the team and its existing symbolism, using the colors purple, gold, and black/gray. He also requested a few options for team merch designs, both incorporating the shoe logo and new elements.
REFLECTION:
I really enjoyed completing this project, as it was both fun and rewarding. Outside of his basic request for a new logo and a general vision of what this could look like, the coach essentially let me create whatever I thought was best. However, as I worked through the ideation process, I realized that this full creative freedom still came with inherent limits. If I created something that strayed too far from typical high school sports logos and merch, both students and parents would likely avoid purchasing it.
With this in mind, I was still able to create a unique logo, but applied it to merch items in a typical way for this audience. I am particularly proud of how I applied positive and negative space in this logo, as the space between the two lightning bolts continues into the shoe form. I also enjoyed experimenting with mockup templates from Adobe Stock (which were used for every mockup pictured above). With more VC classes, I anticipate making further modifications to the design's effectiveness, but at my current education level, I am pleased with its outcome.
